A crime enshrined in Part 1 of Art. 356 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, has a history of its legal regulation and its specifics. Since this act is recognized as criminal by the entire world community, international treaties that enshrine its characteristics and obligations of states acquire particular importance. Therefore, the author, as part of his research, analyzes one of the blocks of such agreements as the source of interpretation of the essence of war crimes. The Hague Conventions adopted in the framework of two peace conferences in 1899 and 1907 act as materials for the work. Methods of description, analysis, comparison and system method of study were applied. The results of the work were the author's conclusions about the role of the Hague Conventions in understanding war crimes under Part 1 of Art. 356 of the Crimi-nal Code, their advantages and shortcomings, as sources of interpretation.
