Despite the efforts made by all law enforcement agencies, the detection of such serious crimes as the deliberate destruction of someone else's property by arson remains at a fairly low level. When investigating crimes of this type, it is often necessary to deal with the use of homemade incendiary devices by criminals, which are specially designed technical devices that ensure the implementation of the criminal intent of the arsonist - the ignition of an object planned for destruction. In the proposed article, the authors, based on the analysis of expert and investigative practice, have identified six of the most common typical designs of homemade incendiary devices used for arson. Knowing the design features of such devices, a fire-technical specialist, as well as a highly qualified criminologist, can carry out a targeted search for fragments of such homemade incendiary devices at the sites of criminal fires. The fact of their detection at the scene will allow specialists to make an unambiguous conclusion about the cause of the fire, which, in turn, will contribute to the correct choice of the priority version about the technical cause of the fire.
