In article the functions which are carried out by the investigator in criminal legal proceedings, a ratio of function of preliminary investigation and charge, function of defense and solution of a case ad rem are considered. The author comes to the conclusion that existence of such number of function, though contradictory by the nature, in hands of the investigator speaks about enough number of means and methods for comprehensive, full and objective investigation of circumstances of criminal case. There are no such levers of cognitive activity in criminal trial neither at court’s, nor at the prosecutor’s, nor at the lawyer’s disposal. Therefore, the investigator is a key figure in the mechanism of a comprehensive, full and objective investigation of circumstances of criminal case.
